New Walney to Wear Cycle Route Opens
A new challenge
Cyclists can now enjoy a new 150-mile challenge
route linking the Irish Sea and the North Sea with the
opening of the Walney to Wear (W2W) cycle route on the
1st June. A variety of celebratory events took place along
the route. In fact our very own Jamie Butcher did a live
radio interview with Radio Cleveland on the go live day.
Forming part of the award-winning National
Cycle Network, it runs from Walney Island, just outside
Barrow-in-Furness, to the River Wear at Sunderland. It
is Regional Route 20 of the National Cycle Network and
is mainly on country lanes and quiet roads, joined up
with sections of cycle path, forest road and off-road
track.
Superb scenery
The route roughly breaks down into the following
parts:
-
Lake District Peninsulars
-
South Cumbria's Low Fells and
the Lune Gorge
-
Eden Valley and North Pennines
-
Land of the Prince Bishops
-
Sunderland and Wearmouth
Highlight of the route of course is the
fact that it passes straight through Hamsterley Forest
so the Visitor Centre - Grove link route will come into
its own.
